Transition to ISBN-13 in Focus on Publishing Software
On January 1, 2007, the book industry will begin using 13 digit ISBNs to identify all books in the supply chain.
Important points to be aware of

1. Existing 10-digit ISBNs will be prefixed by 978
2. The resulting 13-digit number will be identical with the EAN-13 number that is currently encoded in the bar code
3. The 979 prefix will be introduced when the current stock of numbers is exhausted
4. Publishers' identifier prefixes are not likely to remain the same for ISBNs using the 979 prefix
5. Bar codes will carry the 13-digit ISBN with hyphenation above the barcode and the EAN-13, the identical number without hyphens or spaces, below the bar code.
Here are the changes made since 2005 in various modules of Focus on Publishing software in preparation for the ISBN-13 changeover.
Stock window
On the ‘General’ tab of the Stock window you are able to enter both ISBN10 and ISBN13 numbers and Focus promptly error-checks the correctness of both the ISBN10 and ISBN13 fields. Production Window
Going forward, Focus on Publishing software has dropped ability to add 10-digit ISBNs in the Production module. The 13-digit ISBN is applicable with the error-checking facility in place.
EDI
Incoming EDI orders can be matched on either the ISBN10 or ISBN13 basis to the equivalent stock code. Outgoing EDI messages such as invoices, credit notes, delivery notes and order acknowledgements carry both the ISBN10 and the ISBN13.
ONIX Bibliography Files
Focus on Publishing software includes both the ISBN10 and ISBN13 in the ONIX 2.0 or ONIX 2.1 files sent to bibliographic agencies such as Nielsen BookNet and Bowker.
Consignment
Your distributors from around the world may choose to send your consignment sales data in either the ISBN10 of ISBN13 format, and the Consignment module will automatically match the incoming ISBN format to your internal stock codes.
Importing your distributor sales manually
If you do not use the Consignment Module to import your distributor sales, you will need to manually match the incoming ISBN format (ISBN10 of ISBN13) to your internal stock codes, before importing the sales data. Sales order Processing / Purchase orders
Focus on Publishing software accepts and uses both the ISBN10 and ISBN13 numbers. Customer invoices may also carry both the ISBN10 and ISBN13 numbers.
  General Comments
·       Stock codes are strictly for internal use and do not impact on any external data
·       If you use ISBN numbers as your stock codes, there is no problem mixing the ISBN10 and the ISBN13, because Focus only checks stock codes for uniqueness and not the length.
·       If you are yet to populate your ISBN13 field, FOP provides a free conversion routine from ISBN10 to ISBN13 and back.
